IMPLEMENTATION UNITS

WOMEN'S MEDIA WATCH

Women's Media Watch is a progressive, human rights media-monitoring body in Southern Africa, dedicated to empowering women and engaging in the transformation of the media.

The Women's Media Watch fills a much, needed space in the ongoing transformation of Southern Africa. We act as a watchdog of the media. Our activism and voice consistently put pressure on the media to engage with change. The Women's Media Watch is a critical institution in Southern Africa, as our work contributes to strengthening and deepening democracy. We give voice to the voiceless, and insist that the paradigm shift from oppression to empowerment must be reflected in the media of our country.

MEDIA PRODUCTION UNIT

SAMGI developed this unit to fulfil its media development and production needs. Our website was developed and is regularly updated by our in-house Media Production specialists. We have expanded our capacity, which enables us to offer our services to other NGOs and CBOs. We have successfully tendered for a government department communication contract.

SAMGI produces its own media in terms of print, traditional media, new media, radio, video and photography. We have established good working relationships with the community radio and community video sectors. The ripple effect of owning the production process is impacted upon right to grass roots level. The diversity of the network is reflected in the diversity of the media productions. SAMGI productions include low-tech images through to highly digitised applications.

MEN'S UNIT

SAMGI has since the 17 th August 2004 been in discussion around whether we have involved all possible role players in our quest for gender justice and gender transformation. We partnered with the Commission on Gender Equality, The Department of Social Services and Poverty Alleviation, the Mabuphele Campaign and The Department of Health to host a Provincial Men's Summit titled ‘10 years of Democracy' – Where are Men in Gender Transformation. It was clear from the outcomes of this historical event that SAMGI would need to engage with men in our quest for gender justice.

TRAINING UNIT

The training unit plays a pivotal role in SAMGI's work. It responds to direct requests for training, delivers our annual training schedule and updates staff and facilitators on the latest training methodologies. The training unit is also responsible for seeking accreditation for our courses and modules with the relevant education authorities.
